A new home for "Microsoft Flight" deceived fans.
This is a really nice software. I stopped trying to play MSFS way back - my last one was the "98" version. Last year I started playing "Microsoft Flight" and really enjoyed the good sceneries and missions. It was a civil flight simulator with goals and a purpose. I bought the extra sceneries and planes. Then MS quit development for the game...way to go, Microsoft. Flight Simulator X does not have the same nice graphics of it's younger sibling. However, it's a much more complete experience than the one provided by Flight. There are some very good stock sceneries, and a nice collection of small prop-driven planes. The missions included are great to get the feel of the thing, and some of them feature even nice dialogs like the ones from Flight. FSX has the same "traditional way" that the MSFS Series kept since the classic 5.0 version, but includes some nice improvements, and the missions give it a purpose for the goal-driven "player", like me. The virtual cockpits of the planes are very nice. You can play it with an XBox Controller, just like Flight - although it's harder to get a good view around, since the "view" control, in the right stick, is self-centering and there's no way to change that. But, being a much "greater" simulator than Flight, I'm very compelled to get a set of pedals and play it with my old CH Flightstick that's been kept stored for years with no use. If your computer is good enough (and I mean REALLY good, especially in the CPU department), and you got deep pockets, some add-on sceneries and graphic enhancements are really great and can take the overall looks of the game even ahead of those provided by Flight. This review may seem too focused in the "graphics" of FSX. Of course a good simulator is not simply good graphics. But since I play FSX because I would really like to be a real pilot of small planes, I really don't care too much about the planes themselves - to me, it's much more about the airports, airstrips, beautiful places to fly through and everything. Flying warbirds and jets is really not for me - so, to me, the sceneries are what matter the most. I'll always miss the nice Hawaii I had in Microsoft Flight. Overall, a great bargain and a very good software that can hook you up for hours each time you play it. And, for players like me, who use FSX to actually try to learn to fly and get a real feel out of it instead of just picking up countless warplanes for simply taking off and landing and gazing at the fine cockpits, I recommend buying one of the various books about "how to fly" available in Amazon or in your preferred bookstore, and playing a bit everyday.

The Best of an Old Favorite
I went up in a Citabria with a former U2 pilot. He described flying as hours of boredom punctuated by a few minutes of absolute terror. Flight Simulators are fun when there is an objective, something to do, something to learn beyond the hours of eyecandy scenery to view. Combat gives you an enemy to shoot, strafe or bomb. Civilian flight is a different challenge. Flight Simulator X has become just about the only game in town for civilian flight simulations. It's a great title, and the X Gold version is cheap, it includes all the service packs and the accelerator upgrade. It is still well supported by flight sim third party software. FSX has a better engine for flight and graphics than the older FS 2000/ FS2002/ and FS2004. Together with third party software to upgrade sounds, missions, environment, and scenery make it still fun. It is one of the best non competition games ever. You play against yourself and your personal learning curve. So the challenge is always there. The real fun is when you work at figuring out flight. Speaking as a gamer who loves Skyrim and Elder Scrolls, it is fun to play a game where you aren't looking for a cheat, or a glitch. Just take on the challenge of learning. I'm 65 now, and these old eyes and reflexes are still enjoying the challenge of flight. YOU WANT THIS VERSION; AND YOU WILL WANT ABACUS EZGPS NAVIGATION AS AN ADDON TO HELP YOU FLY ANYWHERE IN THE FSX WORLD. I used to love to play Flight Unlimited ii and iii; I kept a computer with xp just to keep those old games alive. So many of the flight sims ran on Windows 95 and 98 and did not transfer to the XP operating system. Flight Simulator X Gold won't install on my Windows 7 64 bit machine. Over the years I have collected the titles from Janes and other flight sims. How I loved Jetfighter 3 and ATF. Microsoft Combat Simulator is still alive and playable. FSX is the best title surviving the genre of years gone by.

The Best Flight Sim......EVER!
This is a great sim and by great i mean.I have no other words to express how well this sim looks, flys, and operates on my PC.(My PC: Phenom 9600 AM2+, ATI 4800 Vid Card with 1GB of GDR 5 RAM,an old Soundblaster audigy zs 2 plat sound card, and 4 GB of PC 6400 DDR2 RAM.h BTW the rig I had when this game came out was a MSI motherbord with SLI(1st gen) with PCIe 1.0 with 2 Evga 6800GT 256 Vid cards,2GBs of 533 Mhz DDR2 RAM,and an AMD 3800 (2.6 Ghz) scockett 939 single core processor,oh yeah, and the above mentioned sound card all runing on XP pro with SP2.The sim worked well on that system too.As you can see, neither system was nowhere near the top of the line system but I can have my aircraft models on ultra high, global graphics set on ultra and my FPS set at a constant 24FPS even going into KLAX. I haven't tried Tokyo yet but I'm sure it'll be flyable. As for all you people having install problems;I had the budget version of FSX installed with service pk 2 since they were available.I had the budget version of FSX and I was very excited to get all the extra aircraft that FSX Gold edition has in them...so in anticipation of the delivery of this excellent combo pk I did a complete uninstall of FSX and saved all my screens. When the great little package with the smiley face appeared at my door,I rushed back to my computer room and opened everything like it was a Christmas present and installed FSX delux first...long install as both disks are DVDs packed with flightsiming goodness.I excepted the EULA and did one intro flight in the Goose, which the budget version doesn't have.I landed the goose off of Redondo Beach and shut down FSX and and installed the Acceleration pk.The add on that makes this flight better.Acceleration not only gives you New aircraft,Missions,Air Races,Red Bull Aerobatic competition,Aircraft carriers that move, excellent graphics, every airport in the world and ,all the service pk and fixes but, also has one of the most vibrant, helpful and friendly, active communities on the internet, such as sim-outhouse .The folks who are having problems would be well served by checking out the forums on the community sites, like the one mentioned above,or google FSX,you'll be amazed at the amount of info out there. All this in one package for fifty bucks makes,Flight Simulator X Gold Edition.....The Best Flight Sim ever. BTW I posted some screens on the main page...check em out.

Great Flt Sim Program and Really Good Price!!!
I had to get a Third one of these because Microsoft has a policy that if you load it on more than 3 computers you have to get another license. You can load it on the same computer an unlimited number of times, so I can see their reasoning. A Tremendous amount of work and research went into this software, and it is well worth the price, at which Amazon sells it, which is less than half the original cost when FSX first came out. It also has a couple more aircraft than FSX Deluxe. However, be advised that there is a Tradeoff. If you load just the first two discs and do not load the 3rd disc,(The Acceleration Pack ), and then you download Sp1 for FSX from Microsoft, then, so far, all the Add On aircraft I put on it have worked fine and the landing lights work at night as they should. However, if you load the 3rd disc, Acceleration Pack, then the landing lights stop working on many of the aircraft, ( but not all) or they are noticeably dimmer in intensity. Strange to say, if you set the time to dawn or dusk, then all the landing lights work fine. So, if you want landing lights to function as they should for all aircraft, do not use the 3rd disc. Download Sp1, but NOT Sp2. Sp2 causes the same problem with the landing lights, but Sp1 does not. Sp1 is needed to load most all of the add on aircraft, otherwise they only partially show up. All you lose by not loading the 3rd disc is a P51 Mustang and an F18 Hornet and Carrier Capability and a Helicopter and some racing features. Now, there is a way around this if you need all that, but want the lights to work, also. Set up a Dual boot on your computer by partitioning your hard drive, and load , say Win 7 on one partition, and then load it again on the other partition. I use both: Win 7-64 bit. on one partition, and Win 7-32 bit on the other partition. That way, you effectively have two computers in one. You are limited to a max of 4GB Ram if you use 32 bit, but that is enough for FSX to work quite well, but, perhaps not with maxed out settings. Now, you can load FSX Gold, with Acceleration Pack on one Partition Operating System and FSX Gold, or Deluxe without the Acceleration Pack or Sp2, on the other Partition Operating System. ( You will need Sp1, however, especially, if you get add on aircraft ). You could try a Virtual Machine Install, but that only allows up to 128MB of video and that might not be enough for good aircraft operation, especially with high scenery and add on aircraft. Also, regardless of what people say, I have found that, while FSX works on Win 8.1, either 64 or 32 bit Operating Systems, that various add on aircraft will either not load on 64 bit, or they will not load on either 64 or 32 bit systems. Win 8.1 has some good features, but for non touch screen desktop operation, overall. Win 7 is much better, but that is my personal opinion, and others may disagree, and that is fine. To each their own. FSX and FS9 work on both Win 7 Systems, 64 or 32. I am unable to get FS9 to work on Win 8.1, on either 64 or 32 bit, yet others are succeeding, so what my problem there, is, I have not found out as yet. Also, on Win 7-64 bit, some add on aircraft will not work. Some software will tell you as you try to load that it is not 64 bit compliant, and some won't tell you, and they will load, but they do not run. I have tried many ideas and suggestions, but none has worked so far. However, those Add on Aircraft that will Not work on 64 bit, work fine on 32 bit. So, my experience is that Win 7 is the Best for general Desktop Operation and for FSX and FS9. One More thing, if you really want everything, then do a triple boot and load Win 7-64 on two different partitions and Win 7-32 on the remaining. Now, you can have Acceleration Pack on 64 bit OS and have whatever RAM you want, and FSX without Acceleration Pack on the second 64 bit OS, and then FSX without Acceleration Pack on the 32 bit Win 7 OS third partition, so that you can load the 32 bit only add on aircraft there, and yet have landing lights working. Also, that way, the two 64 bit OS partitions will handle max RAM for both FSX with and without Acceleration Pack. Hope that all helps someone......SHALOM......Brother Randahl

Quality flight simulator for home
I am not a pilot. I have always wanted to be a pilot, but like so many other people, I have neither the time or money to fulfill this dream. FSX appears to be able to the closest that one can get to real flying, though there might be other simulators our there that provide even a better experience. I use a Saitek X-52 control stick in conjunction with the Saitek Rudder Pedals. The entire package works flawlessly and provides a pleasant, satisfying experience. I do recommend the rudder pedals as it makes taxiing an airplane on the runway much more manageable compared to a twist rudder on the control stick. I have owned previous versions of Microsoft Flight Simulator and this definitely ranks as an upgrade in terms of graphics and adding missions (though I really don't care about the missions). Landscapes in this version appear much more real compared to FS 9. One consistent complaint that I have read from other reviewers is the fact that it requires state of the art computer hardware to run well. I bought this game in 2013 and it came out in 2006. I imagine that by standards of 2006, that is true. I am running it on a 2010 3 Ghz Core Duo iMac via bootcamp Windows 7. It runs fairly smooth on high settings (I have not tried it on ultra high). This machine has a 512MB ATI 4800HD card. Certainly, that is not stellar, but it's not a slouch either (at least by 2006 standards). On a 27" iMac screen it looks pretty nice. The only thing missing is the sensations of flight, which are not going to be simulated in a home flight simulator (at least not right now). The other thing I like about this version of MFS is the fact that there are plenty of add-ons out there. Some of the pay ones are very well done, especially those from Just Flight. It appears to be able to meet the needs of casual flight simmers as well. Overall, I give this version 5 stars and I highly recommend it.

Don't rely on phony reviews!
JUST RECEIVED MS FS X AND IT IS NOT COMPATIBLE WITH WINDOWS 7 64 BIT PREMIUM HOME EDITION! I tried all the compatibility settings from Windows 98 thru VISTA + service packs. MSFS X is designed for older Operating Systems and will not function correctly in my Windows 7 Home Premium and High Performance CyberpowerPC. The glowing reviews of this program running in Windows 7 64 are either total BS or else the reviewers have a white cane and a service dog. I ran the program without using compatibility settings and it loaded, seemingly OK but then on high setting, went haywire. On lower settings the program is completely inferior to FS 2004 in every way. Each time you select a different flight, comes the long and aggravating loading of scenery, which is not encountered in FS 2004. The aircraft don't look as sharp and the whole program is convoluted and the layout for selecting aircraft is lousy. My Logitech Extreme 3D Pro and PRO Pedals show up in the calibration section of X but do not function properly in the game. The so called real pilots with thousands of hours flying time probably haven't been near a real aircraft or else smoking pot. FS 9 has vivid scenery details and is superior to X Gold in every way. This is typical Microsoft crapola of taking their best flight simulator and crapping it up, the same as they did to the original Combat Flight Simulator, the only really good SIM. I threw all the rest of them in the garbage. I threw MSFS X Gold away a few years back because it was crappy, but decided for twenty some dollars to see how it would work in Windows 7 64 bit Home Premium and a new, High end PC. TO THE GARBAGE CAN GOES ANOTHER MICROSOFT MISTAKE. If you like flight simulators, buy the MSFS 9 (2004), it accepts most all controllers, is easy to use, and is about as real as it can get. MSFS 2002 is a great simulator with great scenery and flights. NOTE: In the box were two product keys: BOTH KEYS WERE LABELED INVALID - WHAT A JOKE!

An old program that's still well worth the money.
I've been using FSX for a couple of years now. I'd originally downloaded it from Microsoft. Over time I lost the information needed to download it again when I wanted to reinstall it. Now that I have the physical disks from Amazon I won't have to worry about a repeat of the problem. . FSX was officially released to the US market on October 17, 2006. It's no longer under development BY MICROSOFT, but that hasn't stopped it from selling and being popular. Even though Microsoft has stopped working on it, that hasn't stopped other companies from creating add-ons and improvements to the point where it's practically a new flight simulation. And because it's been around for a while there's thousands of FREEWARE downloads available. Everything from planes and helicopters to scenery and airports. . At the time the it was released in 2006, it needed a very high powered PC. The good news is that just about any desktop computer made today will far exceed the *minimums* from back then. But even today, the more power you have, the better it'll work. Laptops are the exception. Most just aren't made for high demand games. You can buy software that purports to "tune" your computer to run FSX faster. But most of that info is available for free, you just have to look for it. . If you're new to gaming, you'll you want to order a joystick. Everyone has their own idea of what makes a great joystick. You can spend a lot of money, or just a little. I bought the Logitech Attack 3 Joystick when it was only about $20 or $25. But I wouldn't buy it at the current price now. Get it used for only $10 to $15. The Logitech Extreme 3D Pro Joystick (Silver/Black) is similar, and much cheaper. . If you're interested in helicopters some people suggest the Saitek Aviator Flightstick for PC and Playstation 3 as a good starter joystick for helicopters. For more money some strongly recommend the Saitek X52 Flight Control System . That or the Saitek X52 Pro Flight System Controller . And if you really like flying helicopters in FSX another item that you'll want is a rudder set. I have the Saitek Pro Flight Rudder Pedals , but I've also used the CH Products Pro Pedals USB Flight Simulator Pedals ( 300-111 ) . The CH pedals would look more like what you would have in a helicopter. I would be willing to buy any of them used from Amazon. . As you can see, one of the "CONs" is that if you like FSX you'll probably start buying all sorts of add-on hardware :). Just check my Amazon reviews to see how far I've gone. Look on Google for - The poor mans sim pit - (it's on SimViation) to see how I'm doing now. And THAT is only a starting point for some. There are a number of people have used FSX as a base to build full scale cockpits in their home. Type "Home Cockpit" in to YouTube. You'll be amazed. Don't underestimate this "old" program. For the right type of person this can become a really great flight simulator, so don't confuse it with a shoot-um up game where you fly around dropping bombs and shooting at stuff. . What FSX gives you. 1) The world. You can fly to or from just about every city in the world. The airfields (even the tiny grass airfields) are pretty much laid out as they were in 2006. Take off in a seaplane somewhere and land by a small island if you want to. 2) Spring, summer, fall and winter. Sunup, sundown. Daytime, night. Mountains, rivers, lakes, and oceans. Snow, rain, fog. It's all there. 3) Planes!!! Whatever you want to fly. This version only has 24 different planes, but you can buy, or download free versions, of *literally* thousands more. Historical or futuristic planes, take you pick. 4) Topography. Want to fly up the Grand Canyons, or along one of Hawaii's volcanoes? Go ahead. 5) Scenery. The scenery is computer generated. The roads and highways are accurate, but the houses and buildings are simulated for the most part. What you'll want. 1) A joystick AT THE VERY LEAST! You can use just a mouse and keyboard, but you REALLY REALLY REALLY don't want to do that if you can avoid it. After that and depending on what you want to fly, you may decide on a better joystick or a conventional yoke. From there you can go on to everything else that a real plane has. Again, if you want to. Many people have a good time flying with just a joystick. 2) Better scenery. Lets face it, FSX was released in 2006. It went beyond what many computers of the day were capable of. And even today it would take an incredibly amount of hard disk space to have realistic scenery of the whole world. The good news is that there are a lot of freeware airports and other scenery available. On top of that, there's fantastic payware scenery available for people who are interested in certain areas. ***I can HIGHLY recommend Orbx FTX Global***. If FSX were made today it would look like FTX Global does. Two plus years later I'm still having a blast. So go ahead, buy it.

great simulation product
After activating autoplay in Windows 8, the program loaded flawlessly. I had used Flight Simulator X on my old Windows XP machine and the program recognized my CH Products yoke and pedals but they did not respond at first. I downloaded the drivers from the CH Products website and that fixed the problem and I was off and flying. I wanted to try the F-18 and I took off from runway 28R at SFO and headed north. I flew over the Bay Bridge and Alcatraz then headed over the Golden Gate Bridge. It was hard to find SFO on my return and I crashed but it was still fun. Later, I flew a 737-800 out of TPA. It is hard to land the jets but not the Cessna 172SP. I was able to configure two of the switches on my CH Pro yoke to extend and retract the flaps. Was able to take off from Albert Whitted airport in St. Petersburg with a Mooney. Hitting the G key on the keyboard lifted and landing gear. The program automatically adjusts for the time of day, so it is dark when you fly at night. You can change the time of day when you start a free flight exercise. The lessons are fun to go through and they help you learn how to fly. I have flown 20 hours as a student pilot and while this program is good for learning the basics of flight it doesn't replace the real thing but that is why it is called a simulator and not a realulator. Update March 4,2014: After updating my PC to Windows 8.1 my yoke and pedals stopped working again. I downloaded the drivers from the CH Products website and they were working again. I've made over 100 landings, most in the Cessna 172SP and Mooney. It is very hard to land the jets although taking off and flying is easy, even with the F-18. I was able to add a Lake Buccaneer to the program but it did not act realistically, taking off in about 100' on water.

Classic Flight Sim.
Had to purchase this classic flight simulation from Microsoft even though they have stopped the development of this program. Easy to set up and start flying and I recommend this program. Another program you might want to consider is XPlane 10 by Laminar Research. It's a program heavily supported by user groups and although not as polished a user interface as Microsoft it offers some very realistic flying, worth a look and you can download a free demo to try it for yourself.
